Hair transplant can be used to restore hair to areas of the face. In cases where men have thin or missing facial hair, Dr. Nel can use hair from the safe donor zone of the scalp to restore hair to the goatee; moustache; sideburn and cheek areas.

From minor ‘filling-in’ of patchy beard growth to full restoration, the procedure can be performed as long as there is sufficient donor hair available to use.

The number of grafts required for beard restoration surgery will depend on the desired outcome, and the cost will depend on the number of grafts.

The hair transplant surgeon takes hair from the ‘stable zone’ of ‘safe donor area’- usually this is the region at the back of the head, where the hair follicles don’t have androgen receptors that make them vulnerable to androgenetic alopecia, or ‘male pattern baldness’.

Hair Transplant can be used to Restore Areas of the Face

Hair harvested from the safe donor area is not affected by the genetic predisposition which causes hair to fall out.

Hair Transplant Surgeon Dr. Andre Nel, uses the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique as well as the FUT (Strip Surgery Technique) for beard transplants.

Which technique will be used is decided on a case by case basis and is a function of donor vs recipient area ratios as well as patient preference. Follicles are taken from the back of the head and redistributed into the thinning areas of the beard.

Dr. Nel is careful to place the grafts at the correct angle; distributing the donor hair naturally within the recipient site. Very tiny incisions are used in the facial area to minimise scarring.

Once transplanted, the hairs are permanent and will grow just like facial hair; they tend to take on similar characteristics of the ‘native’ hair in the beard area. Once healed, patients can then trim; shave and groom as they wish to create the desired effect.

Visible hair growth from the transplanted follicles usually starts in the fourth month after surgery; improving progressively over the next couple of months when the full result becomes apparent at between 12 months to 18 months post-op.
